Ana Couto and Katherine Whyte from the Offshore Renewables Group attended a one-day workshop entitled “Ocean and Marine Science in Policy and Industry” at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The event was organised by The Royal Society, chaired by Professor David Paterson, and attended by early-career researchers (ECRs) in ocean and marine science, policy makers and industry professionals. The aim of the workshop was to discuss how science can be better used to inform policy and business decisions in Scotland.

During the morning, attendees listened to two excellent keynote talks by Lucy Law and Rhiannon Lewis, followed by a workshop focussed on identifying sector-specific barriers, discussing how can science provide robust evidence to support the industry, and identifying areas of interest for research, industry and policy.

After a networking lunch, where BioSS members had the opportunity to catch up with PrePARED and ECOWINGS project partners also attending the meeting, it was time for Dr Salvatore Aricò and Moya Crawford's keynote talks. The keynote talks were followed by a workshop focussed on identifying ways to overcome the barriers identified during the workshop in the morning, and identifying solutions to the application of science in policy and decision making.
