BioSS has an international reputation in the field of statistics and mathematics applied in the biological sciences. It contributes research, consultancy and training to agricultural, environmental and biological research organisations in Scotland and plays a leading role in collaborative research programmes with UK universities. With some 30 statistics, mathematics and computing specialists and 10 postgraduate research students, BioSS is one of the leading European groups in its field. Approximately half of the BioSS staff are based in our headquarters on the King's Buildings campus of Edinburgh University and the remainder are located in four BioSS units at research institutes in Aberdeen, Ayr and Dundee. Staff from all sites come together regularly to discuss their work and plan new activities.

Research Operations Manager

BioSS seeks a motivated individual to provide operational support to the BioSS Director, Executive and Management Group. Executing this role will also involve leadership within BioSS of several key functions, including Project Management and Communications. As such, this represents an exciting role and the opportunity to join an expanding group of quantitative scientists.

The scope of the role will include management of aspects of business development and knowledge exchange activities from a non-science perspective. The post-holder will identify and implement appropriate delivery methodologies and processes relevant to management and monitoring of projects, communications, business opportunities and staffing resources. This includes support to senior BioSS management in areas such as website development, organisation of meetings, reporting to RESAS, recruitment, and business planning.

BioSS is a member of the SEFARI (Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Research Institutes) collective and offers a stimulating working environment, with over 40 staff and students at four locations, collaborating on applications in plant & crop science, animal health & welfare, environmental science & ecology, and nutrition & human health.

Main Purpose of Job

Responsibility for providing operational support to the BioSS Director, Executive and Management Group. Executing this role will also involve leadership within BioSS of several key functions, including Quality Management, Project Management, and Communication.

BioSS is legally part of the James Hutton Institute, so a key element of the post will include acting as formal liaison with the Hutton Professional Services Departments. The role will contribute more generally to the management and development of policies and procedures within BioSS in order to free and enable science managers and other scientific staff to focus on more technical aspects of their work, including leading funding bids.

The scope of the role will include management of aspects of business development and knowledge exchange activities, from a non-science perspective. The post-holder will identify and implement appropriate delivery methodologies and processes relevant to management and monitoring of projects, communications, business opportunities and staffing resources. This includes support to senior BioSS management in areas such as website development, organisation of meetings, reporting to RESAS, recruitment, and business planning.
