Senior Statistician for Plant and Crop Sciences

Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS) seeks a senior statistician with an interest in developing statistical research and consultancy in plant and crop sciences. An effective transition to sustainable food production is a critical global challenge. With rapidly evolving technologies producing complex and powerful data sets, this position offers exciting opportunities for a committed and innovative statistician to build a stimulating career in a dynamic and collegial working environment.

BioSS has an international reputation for methodological development in statistics, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics and statistical genomics. We have over 50 staff and students at four locations across Scotland, developing and applying quantitative methods in agriculture, ecology, the environment, and human health and nutrition. We collaborate widely with other leading UK and international institutions, working on research to tackle pressing global problems, such as the impacts of climate change, emerging health challenges, and threats to food and water security. Through our work in research, consultancy and training, BioSS aims to provide a better understanding of uncertainty, variation and risk.

Our current work in plant and crop sciences develops cutting-edge research and delivers high-quality statistical consultancy support, built on strong long-term relationships and knowledge exchange with our collaborators. BioSS is one of the Scottish Environment, Food and Agriculture Research Institutes (SEFARI), and contribute to a research programme funded by the Scottish Government. We are co-located and collaborate closely with scientists based at the International Barley Hub and the Advanced Plant Growth Centre . We also have EU research funding, in projects such as INVITE and BreedingValue , developing methodology and influencing practice in crop variety assessment at national and international levels.

We are seeking a statistician to join us to work on multi-disciplinary projects in plant and crop sciences, to develop research proposals in this area, and to contribute to the growth of our organisation as we expand our expertise and strength as a centre of quantitative applied research and consultancy. The successful post-holder will have the opportunity to address real-world problems, collaborating with industry, government agencies and policy-makers, academia, and other research organisations. As well as technical skills, we are therefore also seeking to recruit a statistician with excellent communication skills, who is enthusiastic about communicating their work with different audiences and collaborators.

This position offers an exciting variety of work, significant autonomy to develop a research portfolio, and long-term career development in a supportive environment. This position also has flexibility in location, based at either our site in Edinburgh (University of Edinburgh, King's Buildings campus) or Dundee (James Hutton Institute, Invergowrie).
