Our Work

BioSS has an international reputation in the field of mathematics and statistics applied to the biological sciences.

We have a distributed staff structure to allow close contact with scientists throughout Scotland, with headquarters on the King's Buildings science campus of the University of Edinburgh and offices in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Ayr. We have strong collaborations with many research organisations and universities, and provide high-level statistical, mathematical and computational skills to many client organisations in government and the private sector.

A set of strategic directions which together lay out how we intend to develop in the future is contained in our Corporate Plan 2017-21, along with some brief background information about BioSS and the environment in which we operate.

The principal funder of BioSS is the Scottish Government's Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services Division (RESAS). Over the period 2016-21, RESAS is providing funds to BioSS and its other Main Research Providers (MPRs) to undertake a portfolio of strategic research and translational activites in rural affairs, food and the environment.

Consultancy contributions range from short pieces of advice on specific enquiries through to long-term collaborations in particular projects.

BioSS research is managed under three broad themes, each receiving substantial funding from the Scottish Government augmented by competitive grants and contracts: -

Knowledge Exchange

BioSS staff undertake a wide range of KE activities for many different end-user groups. These include: -

Additional collaborations and links

BioSS has an expanding portfolio of additional collaborators and clients, including universities, scientific research organisations, government agencies and the private sector. These provide stimulation and income additional to those emanating from the Scottish Government and its associated institutes.

Also, BioSS contributes actively to inter-organisational groupings throughout Scotland, particularly the Scottish Consortium for Rural Research.
