BioSS were invited, alongside other stakeholders in the environmental sector, to visit Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm.

Seagreen is situated around 27 km off the east coast of Scotland, and is currently Scotland's largest operational offshore wind farm with 114 turbines. It currently also holds the record for the deepest fixed bottom foundations of any wind farm in the world (at 58.6 metres).

On Friday 13th September, Katherine Whyte from BioSS joined a boat trip out to the site to learn more about the development and experience the newly-built site first-hand. Katherine and the Offshore Renewables Group are part of various projects researching the interactions between seabirds and offshore wind farms on the east coast of Scotland, including the PrePARED Project and ECOWINGS.

Katherine Whyte says:

"Having worked in the science surrounding offshore renewable energy since 2017, it was incredible to get the unique opportunity to see one of these sites up-close. I have a new-found appreciation for the sheer scale of these developments, both in terms of the individual turbine size and the spaces where these large wind farms are now being built."

Thanks to Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm and SSE for the invitation and organisation of the site visit.
