Our Director Professor Mark Brewer attended a meeting of the AI in Mathematical Sciences Working Group of the UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences at Loughborough University on the 26th February 2026.

The meeting brought together around 40 participants from a range of backgrounds including academia, business, industry, and government.

Contributions throughout the day considered the value of mathematics for AI, and highlighted its essential role in building robust, ethical, and impactful systems.

Mark was invited as a panellist for a discussion on the intersection of maths and AI. He commented on the importance of having people with sufficient quantitative skills to be able to interpret and understand the results of any data analysis conducted under the banner of “AI”, given that standard statistical issues, such as those relating to design, power, different types of bias, under- and over-sampling, do not disappear simply because we have access to vast amounts of computational resource.
