BioSS had a great involvement in the 2024 International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science (IDWSDS2024) celebrated on 8 October. The event, organised by the Caucus for Women in Statistics and Data Science, had the theme "Empowering the next generation of statisticians and data scientists" and our colleagues Graciela Martínez Sánchez and Karen Keegan gave great talks about their work on our session "From Animal Health & Welfare to Plant & Crop Science: contributions from statisticians and modellers at BioSS"

Karen, a BioSS, Moredun and Rowett PhD student co-supervised by our Nick Schurch, presented “Optimising avian faecal samples for gut microbiome research via Nanopore sequencing”

Graciela's talk “Understanding by-product material flows in the UK seafood industry to estimate the potential for adding value” described her great contribution to the H2020 Lowinfood project.

Our colleague Altea Lorenzo-Arribas is part of the IDWSDS organising committee and also gave a presentation on her work on "Suffrage, Statistics and Spurious Correlations", on her role as chair of the Royal Statistical Society Celebrating Diversity SIG and secretary of the History of Statistics Section.

All the talks were recorded and will be made available shortly on the Caucus YouTube channel.
