BioSS at the 2024 ICMS “Rewilding Mathematics” London Workshop
This week David Ewing and Altea Lorenzo-Arribas attended the ICMS “Rewilding Mathematics” London Workshop hosted at the London Mathematical Society. The event was organised by Michael Singer (UCL) and other experts from UK organisations (Zoological Society of London, Lancaster University, University of Leicester and University of Glasgow).
Around twenty quantitative researchers from UK universities, research centres, government agencies and private organisations with a common interest in understanding the role that mathematics can play in rewilding initiatives spent two days in London working on the final development of a joint academic article, following an initial workshop in Edinburgh.
Our colleagues also enjoyed a lecture from Wayne Getz (UC Berkeley) on “Hierarchical Segmentation of Animal Movement Tracks using Information Theory” with a case study on barn owls. Getz also presented the NOVA software modeling building platform which he's developed together with Richard Salter (Oberlin College) to allow applied scientists, with minimal coding skills, to build cutting edge models for management and research.
Plans for further collaborations were also discussed, so there will be more news on maths rewilding in the near future!
