BioSS IT group consisits of the IT Manager (4 days a week), a Programmer, a part-time Data Processor and the assistance of an EUCS Computing Officer 1 day per week.
We provide support for around 25 staff, students and vistors in Edinburgh and a further 20 staff and students at other sites.
At JCMB in Edinburgh, we run a distributed computing system based on Solaris and Linux Workstations and PC's running X-server software. We are connected via the Edinburgh University backbone to JANET and the outside world. We are currently porting many of our services - DNS, NIS, mail, web (including tomcat), ftp, ssh, dhcp, mysql - to RedHat Linux. Staff and students either have a Linux workstation or a PC. PCs have managed desktops and use Samba to provide authentication and access home directories and printers. We also have access to Linux clusters at Rowett and Scottish Crops Research Institutes
Staff use a range of standard statistical and mathematical software - Genstat, Minitab, S-Plus, R, SAS, WinBUGS, MATLAB, Octave, Maple, Scilab as well as specialist software for Image processing. Much of the statistical modelling work involves home grown programs in Fortran, C, C++ and Java, utilising commercial and freeware libraries of software routines.
We have experience of developing software with graphical interfaces using Visual Basic/C++ (STAR) and Java (TOPALi) and providing interfaces to databases (Var-Adapt and VISOR)
