Activities
Responsible for Linux system administration and custom application
development, installation and maintenance, particularly for Knowledge
Transfer activities.
System Administration
Beyond day-to-day maintenance of the systems, I am undertaking the
following long-term activities to improve the manageability and
resilience of BioSS computing resources.
- LCFG
-
Test and deploy LCFG system configuration tool, ported to RHEL 5.
- Webserver migration
-
Migration of various webserver(s) onto new hardware to improve
resilience and separation between internal and external
applications.
- Intranet search
-
Identify and deploy an open source search solution to index
documents on the BioSS intranet.
Software Development
I undertake various software development duties, responding to needs
originating both within and without BioSS. Current projects include:
- Knowledge transfer showcase
-
Web application to encapsulate small programs written at BioSS and
allow remote users to use them with their own datasets. The
intention is to demonstrate some of the work we do here without the
overhead of writing a custom application each time we wish to make
one of our programs available.
- Timesheets (BioSS internal)
-
Assist in migration of time recording system from paper timesheets
to electronic submission with reporting to individuals and
managers. Currently at the prototype phase.
- Uploader (BioSS internal)
-
Add user-requested features to secure upload area application.
