Vegetation cover is sometimes studied from planes or satellites using synthetic aperture radar. Microwave radiation is beamed down to the earth's surface and a sensor detects the reflected signal which is usually a function of the crop, soil condition and moisture.

In this module we use as an example microwave backscatter data from a field in East Anglia, UK.
