To illustrate the PLS method here we will show its application in (meta-)analysis of data from a series of field experiments aimed at evaluating the performance of potato varieties in the UK.

DATA :

Y VARIABLES
- variety yields from a number of centres (centres = variables)

X VARIABLES
- variety characteristics, e.g. disease resistance.

QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED :

WHAT INFLUENCES VARIETY X CENTRE VARIATION ?
- are there variety characteristics which control how variety yields change between environments ?

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE PLS MODEL ?
- what proportion of variation is explained by the fitted model ?
