Allozymes are variants of polypeptides
representing different allelic alternatives of the same gene locus.
Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA
This technique detects sequence changes within Polymerase Chain Reaction
primimg sites. The profile of fragments produced by a primer is detected
by bands on a gel. Sequence changes cause a profile change and so some bands
on the gel will be different.
Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism
DNA is digested with a restriction enzyme that cleaves the DNA at
recognition sites. Analysis of the resulting fragments allows the biochemist
to determine whereabouts on the DNA, the restriction sites are.
Restriction sites are usually about 6 bases long. If one of the bases has
changed, the site is lost. If the sites vary among individuals in the
population, the restriction fragment lengths will vary and so there is a
polymorphism.
