I have been employed by the USA Government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), first based in Seattle and now at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California. My research focuses on the population ecology of cetaceans, including: assessments of abundance and demographics using photographic markrecapture methods; photogrammetric studies of individual size, growth and body condition; and analysis of movement patterns using photo-identification and satellite telemetry. This involves me in field-based data collection, for species such as killer whales and gray whales, along with the development of custom statistical analysis tools to inform current management and conservation issues. I am keen to promote public understanding of marine mammals, and was honoured to act as an advisor to the BBC Natural History Unit during the making of the Frozen Planet series narrated by Sir David Attenborough.
