The ALARM project

ALARM (Assessing Large scale environmental risks for biodiversity with tested Methods) was a project of the 6th Framework Programme of the European Union, that ran from 2004 until 2009. It involved over 200 scientists working in 67 organisations in 35 countries, and aimed to develop an integrated risk assessment for biodiversity in the terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems of Europe. The project focused on five key pressures: climate change, land use change, environmental pollution, invasive species, and loss of pollinators.

The BioSS contribution

BioSS contributed to the project both through the provision of provision of research-led mathematical and statistical support to specific scientific work package, through the creation of an online training course on quantitative methods for biodiversity risk assessment, and through a broader integrative role in the development of a Risk Assessment Toolkit for European Biodiversity. The BioSS team was lead by Glenn Marion. Stijn Bierman, Adam Butler, Stephen Catterall, Ruth Doherty and Alex Cook worked on the scientific side of the project, whilst David Nutter and Muriel Kirkwood worked on web design and the construction of the online training course.
